VALIE PLUS – Pocket Archive is intended to be an on-going series placing its interest within film, video and performance focusing on queer and feminist perspectives, representations and viewpoints.

In the „Pocket Archive“ we will „export“ films and videos of international artists and filmmakers to Berlin. These will be selected from the 7000+ films and videos held in the archive of Bildwechsel in Hamburg, an umbrella organisation for Women+/Media/Culture. ..

LaDIYfest is a non-profit volunteer run Do It Yourself (D.I.Y.) festival of music, art, performance and workshops, organized and orchestrated by feminist activists, artists and musicians of various genders. It helps to showcase the skills and talents of a diverse group of groundbreaking feminist people working in the arts, community building and activism. It is a PARTICIPATORY festival, a community festival.

In Berlin we take on the idea of the first Ladyfests of empowering the presence of women in the arts and try to take it further, outside the binary gender system.

As LaD.I.Y.fest Berlin is non-profit, we donate any excess cash that is received to other organizations that are non-commercial. While we like to give anything we can to those who we think deserve it and of course share our feminist standards, we are especially interested in helping those that have their focus specifically on feminist and queer politics.

A mixed and open screening is planned and we are looking forward for your videos of every genre! (short, long, roadmovies, docs, fiction, science fiction, porns, animations, storys, everydaylive-observations, the thinkable and the unthinkable )

DEADLINE for submitting films is 15th of august.

Have you ever had this problem: your ideas won’t fit the format, whether it was 4:3, or even 16:9?
Ever thought of changing your position, or turning the camera around?
Try it: all of a sudden things appear totally different.
We recommend ‘high format’ (portrait/vertical format) for “out-of-the-box thinking”.

For the video festival “parole: hochformat” in autumn 2010, bildwechsel is looking for short videos in ‘high format’.

‘parole: hochformat’ can be seen as a request to artists and to audiences to change position alongside a changing video format (from landscape to portrait).
It is an invitation to take note, to position one’s self and to change one’s position.

“CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE OR TAKE ACTION”

is therefore the motto of this call for films.

all contributions must be made in ‘high format’.
videos should not exceed 5 mins.

PAROLE-HOCHFORMAT

is a videofestival which will be staged in hamburg in autumn 2010 for the first time. It is organised by bildwechsel and will take place at ten different locations: artist run spaces, alternative spaces, small galleries, womens+-places. On large TV monitors we will present the compilation of freshly made short videos in ‘high format’.
The screenings of the high format compilation will alternate with videos from the bildwechsel archives which will be specifically selected for each of the ten chosen locations. There may also be shop window presentations at additional locations.

BILDWECHSEL

is an audiovisual archive offering an international panoramic view of video and film work made by women+ over the last 30 years. Over 7.000 videos and films are archived at Bildwechsel.
The collection is classified into various archive sections, currently has a rapidly growing number of international queer videos/films as well as works by international women+ artists.

Panel Discussion at Entzaubert Film Festival Berlin

bildwechsel was invited to take part in the panel discussion on Queer DIY – Art, Activism & Film making at Entzaubert – queer D.I.Y. International Film Festival Berlin.

From the program:
“This Panel addresses some questions of DIY creative self-production in the queer community: What is DIY? Is art-making a form of activism? and how? How can queer DIY film- and art-making subvert dominant discourses (capitalism, heteronormativity, racism and other oppressions)? Solo-practice vs. collaboration: How is autonomous self-representation and -production enacted by these different modes of working? What is the impact of community support (queer film festivals, archives, distribution) on queer culture and activism?

Presentations by Liz Rosenfeld, Thirza Cuthand, Vika Kirchenbauer, Ho Tsm, bildwechsel, and other filmmakers and curators, both local and international. Followed by open discussion for all. Come with ideas and questions!„

Bildwechsel will take part at the Workshop „Group, Collaboration, Network, Sharing – how does it really work?“, organized by Megafån. It is a gathering to discuss what it means, to work in a group with a feminist/ queer/ gender perspective and using collaborations as a feminist strategy. We will introduce Bildwechsel with a focus on its archives and building up networks, followed by a video screening. We will show videoworks from the last ValiePLUS – pocket archive screening.

Workshop will be hold in english.

The 2nd of June is the International Day for Sex Workers’ Rights. All over the world, sex workers are facing a variety of problems: Their work is not fully accepted due to taboos, discrimination, police harassment, ostracism. Sometimes, their access to health and social services is denied. We take this day as an occasion to show some international short films, that partly where made in the sex workers’ movements. The selection includes:

ONE DAY

(DK 2007, Ditte Haarløv Johnsen, 30 min).

Intimate close-ups conceal faces but reveal sordid circumstances in ONE DAY, a complex short about a 36-year-old Ghanaian prostitute who earns a living in a suburb of Copenhagen. The camera captures her body infragments, discrete and respectful, using close-ups that never reveal her entire face. Just a day in her life.

THE SEX WORKERS’ WORLD CUP

(Germany 2010, Chawla/Schäfer/Wiese, 30 min).

Just before the World Cup 2006, Germany was overrun by the rumor that 40.000 women were going to be trafficked into Germany for ‘forced prostitution’. This short film tracks how this discourse came into being, and what the realities were for sex workers during the games.

Most films are shown in English or with English subtitles.

Joan is a music video that confronts the viewer with the violence trans people face in their daily lives. Featuring portraits of gender queers from around the world, as well as a few famous faces from Canada, the video offers recognition for the difficulty in surviving oppressive conditions. The love song, an anthem against transphobia, reminds us that through supporting one another we are not alone.

Maggots and Men, an experimental historical narrative set in post-revolutionary Russia, re-tells the story of the 1921 uprising of the Kronstadt sailors with a subtext of gender anarchy. A thoughtful homage to Soviet silent era directors and artists of the Russian avant-garde, the film explores themes of re-invention, revolution, community, and corruption.
